Activity Details
Hike to Base Camp – Begin your Mount Baker mountaineering adventure at the Park Butte Trailhead (3,360 ft). Hike 3.5 miles along the scenic Railroad Grade trail through meadows to Sandy Camp (5,800-6,300 ft) at the base of the Easton Glacier, gaining 2,600 feet in 3-4 hours. Take in stunning views of Mount Baker and the Twin Sisters Range. After setting up camp, enjoy a relaxed evening with a hearty dinner, acclimating to the alpine environment and preparing for the next day’s training.
Glacier Skills Training and Rest – After breakfast, join your expert guides for a 3-4 hour glacier skills session near Sandy Camp. Learn or refine essential mountaineering techniques, including crampon use, ice axe self-arrest, and roped glacier travel, tailored for beginners and experienced climbers alike. Spend the afternoon resting, exploring the glacier’s edge, or practicing skills, with time to enjoy the serene alpine scenery. Share a group dinner and rest early to prepare for the summit push.
Summit Ascent and Descent – Rise early (2-4 AM) for an alpine start. Rope up and ascend 4,800 feet up the Easton Glacier, navigating snow slopes and crevasses to reach Sherman Crater (9,700 ft), where volcanic aromas mark the steaming crater. Climb the steep Roman Wall (35-40 degrees) to the summit plateau, reaching Grant Peak (10,781 ft) for breathtaking North Cascades views. After celebrating, descend to Sandy Camp, pack up, and hike back to the trailhead by mid-afternoon (12-14 hours total).
